Check the New Mexico Scholastic Chess site for upcoming tournaments, events and other information (including statewide scholastic player rankings, which include numerous Aspen Chess Club members).

Here are some recommended sites for learning chess

How To Play Chess - a site with a lot of flash movie lessons, good for all scholastic levels. Goes over basic moves, strategy, checkmate patterns, tactics, and defense (and how to play end games).

Academic Chess - chess lessons, famous games to examine, tests, worksheets (a good site for advanced beginners and higher)

ChessKids - a good tutorial for beginners.

Chess.com - popular with Aspen kids. Play online or do your tactics. The tactics training is the best on the web, you can do 3 a day for free, but have to buy membership to do more. Solving tactics problems of this sort is perhaps the best way for intermediate players to improve.

Chesskid.com - New this year! This may now be the recommended site for Aspen players - in fact we may use chess club money to buy memberships for serious players.

Don’t for get that the PC software Chessmaster, Majestic Chess, and Chess Mates also have lessons and will play games with you. Majestic Chess is highly recommended for younger kids.
